GETTING STARTED:
Welcome to GEORGE FOREMAN'S INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO GRILLING, BARBECUE AND ROTISSERIE! This handy CD-ROM is based on the best-selling cookbook by "King of the Grill" George Foreman, with chef Barbara Witt, and contains additional features unique to this computerized edition.
The Readme File:
*This README file contains the complete text of the manual for GEORGE FOREMAN'S INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO GRILLING, BARBECUE AND ROTISSERIE.
To access the README file on this CD-ROM:
*With the disc in the drive, double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
*Next, right-click the icon shaped like a chef's hat, and click "open" on the pop-up menu.
*You will see a file called Readme.txt. Double click on that file to open it.
The installer will usually run automatically, once the CD-ROM is inserted into your drive. If it does, go to Step 3.
Step 2:
If the installation program does NOT run automatically on your computer:
*Click on "Start" on your desktop
*On the menu that pops up, click "Run"
In the box that appears, type:
D:/setup.exe
(Where "D" represents the letter your computer uses for the CD-ROM drive. Most computers call it "D," but yours may use a different letter. To find out which letter designates your computer's CD-ROM drive, click "My Computer" and look at the icons in the menu that comes up.)
Step 3:
*Follow the prompts that appear on your screen. After installation, a shortcut will appear on your desktop called "George Foreman". You can start the program by clicking on this.
*You can also start the program by left-clicking "Start" -> "Programs" ->"George Foreman" - > "George Foreman."
NOTE: The installer allows you to choose where you want the Interactive Guide installed on our computer. Please do NOT install this Guide to any of the following directories:
C:/
C:/WINDOWS
C:/winnt
Doing so may interfere with the normal operation of your computer.
GETTING AROUND:
Navigation
Just as you flip through the paper pages of a book, you can flip through GEORGE FOREMAN'S INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO GRILLING, BARBECUE AND ROTISSERIE by using the navigation buttons.
Using the Table of Contents
The Table of Contents (on the screen's left side) lists the sections of the book, under the chapter headings.
* Click on any chapter heading or recipe title in the Table of Contents that you wish to see. The corresponding item appears on the main viewing frame on the right side of the screen.
* If, while you are in the in the Table of Contents, you cannot see the recipes listed under a given Chapter Head, click on the plus sign next to it (+) and the chapter contents will appear under it. (You have to click on the plus sign; clicking on the chapter head will take you to the chapter in the main window)
* To hide the sub-headings, click on the minus sign (-).
Besides appearing in the Table of Contents, the recipes in each chapter are also listed on each chapter's Title Page.
* To see each chapter's Title Page, click on any chapter heading. The list of recipes in each chapter will appear on the right, in the main viewing screen.
* The recipe titles are hyperlinked. That means, if you are on a Chapter Title Page, click on the title of any recipe in the main viewing frame to go directly to that recipe.
Show and Hide TOC
* If you want to make the Table of Contents go away (which makes the recipe viewing area wider in the same size screen), go to the TOC Show/Hide button, on the extreme top left corner of the TOC window. It has a downward-facing arrow. Click on this button.
*Note that this also makes the Search Window disappear as well. (See sections 10 and 11 of this text for how to perform searches.)
* To make the TOC and Search Window reappear, left-click on the TOC Show/Hide button again.
Page Navigation
*A chapter or recipe can consist of one or more pages, which you can access by "Page Navigation."
Using the menu buttons
Two menu buttons at the top right side corner of your screen are labeled "Recipe" and "Page"
On each of the buttons labeled "Recipe" and "Page," there is a back arrow (<) and a forward arrow (>) on either side.
To the buttons' right is a text box into which a specific page number can be typed.
* Click the back arrow (<) on the "Recipe" or "Page" button to go to the previous recipe or page.
* Click the forward arrow (>) on the "Recipe" or "Page" button to go to the next recipe or page.
* To go to a specific page, enter the page number in the text box, then either click the "Go" button, or hit the enter key on your keyboard. (Note: the Interactive Guide begins on page 7.)
* Above the "Go" button is a button with just a forward and back arrow (<>). Click on the appropriate arrow in this button to go to the FIRST (<) or LAST (>) page of the Interactive Guide.

* Click on this icon to print the one page that you are currently viewing
* At the end of each recipe that is not its own article, there is a link that says "Print Recipe"
* Click on this phrase to print that entire recipe. (If the recipe is more than one page long, this command will give you all the pages without having to print each page separately. However, any highlights or Cook's Notes you make on these pages will not appear in the printout. See below for more on how to make Highlights and Cook's Notes.)
INPUTTING YOUR OWN MATERIAL
Highlight
The "Highlight" icon is at the top center of the screen. It looks like a marker making blue lines on a page.
This option works like a highlighter marker. Use it to set off with color any text of the book that you choose, such as words, lines, sentences or paragraphs.
You can also remove highlighting from any text you have already set off.
There are four highlight colors: yellow, green, blue, or pink.
In any particular paragraph, you can highlight different lines or words with any combination of different colors.
Add Highlight
* Click on the mouse, and while holding down the button, drag the mouse over the text you want to highlight. When you reach the end of the section you want to highlight, let go of the mouse button. The selection should be set off in your computer's usual screen highlight color.
* Click the Highlight icon at the top of the screen.
A drop-down menu appears that says "Select Highlight Color"
òLeft-click on the color you want, from the four colors shown.
The text will then be highlighted with the color you picked.
Repeat steps above to highlight any other text you want, as many times as you want on any page. If you want to change the color of a selected highlight, just repeat steps to select highlight color again.
Note that you may get an error message if you try to highlight text that spans two or more paragraphs. In that case, just select and highlight each paragraph separately.
Remove Highlight
* Select the highlighted text as described in first step above. (You must select all of the text in order to remove the highlight. You cannot remove only a part of an existing highlight.)
* Click the Highlight icon at the top of the screen.
The drop-down menu appears as described above.
* Click "Remove Highlight Color" to remove the highlight. The highlight disappears.
* You can select it again and re-highlight if you wish as per the steps to "Add highlight" above.
Bookmark
The Bookmark icon is at the top center of the screen. It looks like an open book with a red ribbon in it.
With bookmarks, you can select certain pages you want to refer to quickly (for example, favorite recipes that you cook a lot). They are then grouped together on one screen, the Bookmark Manager, for reference. You can also make small notes in the Bookmark Manager about why you are bookmarking the page (for example, "Dad's favorite chicken recipe").
The Bookmark Manager window displays your comment, with the page number of the bookmarked page and the date and time when the page was bookmarked.
Add annotated bookmarks on any page of a book. You can also delete a bookmark you've created. You can print the displayed list of bookmarks for future reference.
Note: When you add a bookmark to a page, the Bookmark icon will appear on the top right corner of that page, inside the viewing screen area on the right.
To Add A Bookmark
* Navigate to the page you want to bookmark (see sections under "Navigation," above, for how to get around the Interactive Guide.)
* Click the Bookmark icon.
The Bookmark menu drops down, showing you the following options.
Add Bookmark
Delete bookmark
View all bookmarks
* Click "Add Bookmark "
The Bookmark Manager window appears.
* Type your comments into the Bookmark Manager window.
* Click "Save & Close" in the Bookmark Manager window.
The Bookmark Manager box will disappear, but the Bookmark icon now appears on the page.
*In order to view the comments for a particular bookmark, click the Bookmark icon on a chosen bookmarked page.
Note:
* Click on the Delete option to erase all the comments in the Bookmark Manager window.
* You can add any number of Bookmarks to the Interactive Guide, but only one bookmark per page. You can add as much commentary as you want within the window.
* You can add a Bookmark to any page of the Interactive Guide.
To Remove A Bookmark
* Navigate to the page for which you want to remove the bookmark (see sections on "Navigation," above, for how to get around the Interactive Guide.)
* Click the Bookmark icon.
The Bookmark drop-down menu appears as noted above.
* Click "Delete Bookmark" in the drop-down menu to remove the bookmark from the page
Note:
* You can delete any number of Bookmarks that you have added to the Interactive Guide.
* You can delete Bookmarks from any page.
* The Bookmarks you have added will stay in the Interactive Guide until you delete them, even if you close the product.
(Important note: Bookmarks, as well as Highlights and Cook's Notes, are kept on the computer where you installed the Interactive Guide. If you install the Interactive Guide on another computer, it will NOT take these things, which you made, along with it.)
View All Bookmarks
* Click on the Bookmark icon from any page.
The Bookmark drop-down menu appears as described above.
* Click the "View All Bookmarks" option from the drop-down menu.
A "Bookmark List" window appears, showing all the bookmarks you created for the book, with your comments and the page number underlined. Click on any page number to go to that page.
Click "Print" at the bottom of the window to print the current Bookmark List.
Cook's Notes
The Cook's Notes icon appears at the top center of the screen. It shows a hand, writing on a page.
You can use this feature to make your own notes to recipes - such as ingredient substitutions you discover, or anything else. (For example: "Mom is allergic to this recipe. Don't make it if she's coming over.")
Annotations can be applied only to paragraphs. However, each line of the ingredients list is usually its own paragraph and can be individually annotated. The recipe instructions are formatted as paragraphs.
You can make notes to any paragraph, and/or edit the existing notes. However, Cook's Notes does not work on Table of Contents entries and Index entries.
In other words, you can only add highlights, bookmarks and notes to content in the viewing window, not the TOC window.
The Cook's Notes you make appear in a colored bar on the page itself, at the place on the page you chose for them, along with the date and time that you made the note.
Add Cook's Note
* Find the page, and the paragraph within it, for which you wish to make notes.
* Click the mouse and, holding down the button, drag it over the paragraph you wish to select. When you reach the end of your selection, release the button.
* Click the Add Cook's Notes icon.
The Cook's Notes menu drops down, giving you the following options:
Add Cook's Note
...start of para
...end of para
...As Icon
View All Cook's Notes
* Click "....Start of Para" to add your notes at the beginning of your selected paragraph.
OR
Click "....End of Para" to add your notes at the end of your selected paragraph.
OR
Click "....As icon" to display the annotation only as an icon. The icon looks like a pencil.
* The Cook's Notes window will appear
Type your notes into this window. (Note that if you start a new line in this window by pressing "return," you will NOT get this formatting in the final note that appears on the page.)
* Click "Save and Close" in the window to save your notes. When the window closes, the notes appear on the page you are viewing.
* If you have selected the "As Icon" option, click on the pencil icon to read your notes in the "Cook's Notes Manager" window
View All Cook's Notes
* On any page, anywhere in the product, left-click on the Cook's Notes icon.
The Cook's Notes menu drops down as described above.
* Click "View all Cook's Notes."
* A window will appear labeled "Cook's Notes List" featuring the number of the annotation, the title of the book, the page on which the Note occurs, and the date and the time the note was made.
* Each note appears as a separate entry in the list. If more than one note was made for a given page, they will each appear as separate notes.
* The page number is highlighted and underlined. Click on the page number to see the notes you made.
Note: You don't need to select an entire paragraph; any part of it will do. However, if you select text across more than one paragraph, you will get a message from the program telling you to select only one paragraph.
* To edit a Cook's Note that you have already made, go to the note on a page, then click on the pencil icon. The "Cook's Notes Manager" window will open and you can type your edits. Then click "Save and Close" to save the changes.
SEARCHING THE INTERACTIVE GUIDE
Quick Search
Quick Search is the fastest way to find information in GEORGE FOREMAN'S INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO GRILLING, BARBECUE AND ROTISSERIE.
Use this feature when you want to look for a particular word, phrase, or ingredient.
Quick Search searches the whole Interactive Guide for every occurrence of the search word.
If the search text is a phrase, it will search for every occurrence of only the first word of the phrase. See "Advanced Search" below for more ways to search for a phrase.
Go to the Quick Search text box on the upper left side of the screen (above Table of Contents. If you have hidden the TOC, left-click on the TOC control button at top left).
* Type in the word you want to search. Make sure it is spelled correctly.
* Click the "Go" button.
A window called "Search Results" appears. In it are listed: the page number, the chapter name, and the line where the word appears.
* Choose a search result and click on it.
You will be taken to the page where that search result appears, and the word you were searching for will be highlighted there.
* The search result dialogue box continues to appear in the background if you don't close it.
Press the Alt and Tab keys together to bring the search window to the front at any time.
Click on the "X" at the top right of the search dialogue box to close it.
Advanced Search
Use Advanced Search to perform a more thorough search, based on priorities that you choose.
This feature is especially useful when you want to search for a phrase or string of connected words.
The Advanced Search button is located above the Quick Search text box, on the left side of the screen above the Table of Contents.
(If you have hidden the Table of Contents, left-click on the TOC Control Button to make it reappear)
To Use Advanced Search:
1. Click the Advanced Search button.
The Advanced Search Window appears on the screen.
2. Type in the word or phrase you want to search for in the "Search Here" text box, at the top left of the Advanced Search Window.
If you are unsure of a letter or letters in the word, or you want to specify many forms of the same word, type in an asterisk. (*)
Examples:
If the search text is "int*," the search will look for all words starting with "int-," like "inter, internal, interior, international," etc.
If the search text is "*ing," the search will look for all words ending with "-ing" like "coming, going, saying," etc.
If the search text is "com*r," the search will look for all words starting with "com-" and ending with "-r" like "commander, commuter, computer, communicator" etc.
3. Left-Click the appropriate Search Options from the drop down menu at the top left of the Advanced Search Window.
The Search Option drop down list appears:
or
and
phrase
This is how the Advanced Search Options work:
OR :
When you choose this option, if the search text contains a phrase of two or more words, Advanced Search splits it up and searches for lines containing each separate word.
So, if you type in "Lemon Chicken," the search will produce all lines containing the word "lemon," plus all the lines containing the word "chicken."
Remember, "OR" OPENS UP the search to MORE possibilities.
AND:
When you choose this option, if the search text contains a phrase of two or more words, Advanced Search searches for lines containing all the words in the phrase - but not necessarily the phrase itself.
So, if you type in "Lemon Chicken," the search splits up the phrase into its component words and finds lines where all three words appear in the line. The words will NOT NECESSARILY APPEAR IN THE FORM OF THAT PHRASE.
You could get a result like: "marinate the chicken in the lemon zest "
You will get many fewer results, however, because in this case, all three words would have to be in the line to count. You can use any number of words in the search.
Remember, "AND" NARROWS DOWN the search to FEWER possibilities
EXACT PHRASE:
When you choose this option, if the search text contains a phrase, Advanced Search will search for lines containing the whole phrase as you typed it in. With this option, you will only find lines with the words "lemon chicken" appearing together, in that order, with nothing in between.
4. After you have selected the Search Options, click the Search Type from the drop-down menu on the second row, left, of the Advanced Search Window.
The Search Type drop down list appears:
All content
Recipe Titles Only
Complete Recipe Text
TOC
This is how the Search Type Options work:
All Content - This option will search the whole Guide for the search word or phrase.
Title -This option will search the Section titles for the search word or phrase.
Index - This option will look in the index page for the search word or phrase.
TOC - This option will look in the TOC page for the search word or phrase.
5. Next, select the number of View Results that you want to see, from the drop down menu at the top of the Advanced Search Window, in the middle of the second row.
The Search Result drop down list appears
1-10
1-20
1-30
This determines how many instances you will get in the final results box.
Search results will appear in the order in which they appear in the Table of Contents of the Interactive Guide. Each result will appear in context, with some of the words that appear before and after it in the text, so you can review which result is most relevant for you.
6. Click to put a check mark in "Stemming" if you want to use this feature.
This means that the search will look at the root word of a word with a suffix (added ending).
For example, if you enter the word "Grilling," the search will take off the "-ing" and look at "grill-." Then it will look for all possible related words, such as "Grilled," "Grillable," etc.
This will only work for the endings of words, not prefixes (added beginnings.) For that, see the use of "*" in step 1 above ("entering text in the search box." ).
7. Once you have selected all your options at the top of the Advanced Search window, click on the "Go" button.
The number of results you asked for will appear listed in the Advanced Search window.
8. To go to one of these results, click on it.
You will be taken to the page with the result, and the word or phrase you were seaching for will be highlighted.
9.The search listings box remains open in the background if you don't close it.
Press Alt+Tab keys together to bring it to the front at any time.
Left-Click on the "X" at the top right of the Advanced Search Window to close it.
